The iconic and historic Hotel Del Coronado is one of the few surviving examples of an American architectural genre: the wooden Victorian beach resort. When it opened in 1888, it was the largest resort hotel in the world. It has been featured in numerous movies and books, and has hosted presidents, royalty, and celebrities. In 1977 it was designated a National Historic Monument. MASON Architects recently worked with Burton Landscape Studio to redesign the hotel’s main pool area to create a more memorable beach experience for guests. 12 guestrooms were slated for demolition to allow the pool to open to the hotel’s beach experience. The new pool was designed to include a submerged hydraulic platform that can be raised to create a unique pool top dance floor and venue.
MASON Architect’s scope of work included demolishing an upper level ocean view “Burger Bar” and designing a new bar with kitchen in keeping with the iconic hotel architecture. On the lower level off the pool, a pool bar, retail area, pool toilets and lockers as well as ADA upgrades to the meeting space rest rooms were to be added and renovated, as well as a new casual deck restaurant and 20 cabanas.
