The project was for OMRAN, the leading developer in Oman’s growing tourism industry. The W Hotel was one component of a larger master planning and design project for the premium 32 acre beachfront Intercontinental Hotel site close to the Royal Opera House in downtown Muscat, the capital of the Sultanate of Oman.
The primary entry is punctuated by a dramatic axial procession from Al Kharijiyah Street to a water feature and promenade extending to the ocean. The entry pulls the guest arrival experience through to the ocean beyond and moves the guest down to a lower restaurant level that also captures ocean views over the main pool recreation area.
The overall hotel design is modern, consisting of 3 elegant forms: the main guestroom tower with 5 levels of guestrooms over 2 levels of public spaces, a 5-story double guestroom wing with a pool deck and nightclub on the roof level. The three forms are clad with sunshades in a variety of Islamic and Omani inspired geometric patterns creating shade and shape for a sophisticated urban resort in the W tradition.
